Home > Treated vs Untreated Timber
Untreated timber is all natural and only undergoes natural processes such as air and/or kiln drying, no chemicals are added and is essentially wood in its natural state with reduced moisture.
Treated timber is the same wood as untreated timber however it will have passed through a chemical process which enhances the timbers’ durability. This process requires the wood to be placed inside a vacuum chamber which sucks the air out of the timber, the chamber is pressurised and treatment liquid is then forced into the gaps left by the removed air. This liquid acts as a preservative protecting the timber from insects, fungal decay and moisture.
Because untreated timber is in a natural state – there is no chemical enhancement used – it is more vulnerable to environmental factors such as moisture and decay.
Treated timber is purpose treated to be in contact with the elements thus is ideal for outdoor projects where it could be in contact with soil, moisture, insects and fungus.
Because of the chemical enhancement, treated timber is unsuitable for projects such as a dining table, desks or bed frames etc. protective equipment when handling treated timber is also a drawback whereas its unnecessary for handling untreated timber. Untreated timber is also easier to paint or stain to your liking so makes a better choice for home projects.
The main takeaway here is, treated timber, because of its’ durability and longevity, is best suited to outdoor projects or any high moisture environment and is a much less hassle to work with when compared with heavier materials such as rock, metal or concrete.
Untreated timber is best for any occasion where people frequently are coming in contact and/or will be used with a specific aesthetic in mind.
